UNIVERSE EXPLODED TOMI GRAY – “UNIVERSE EXPLODED”
8th Full Moon Release of 2025 – Out Now
Australian troubadour of the strange Tomi Gray returns beneath the glow of the year’s eighth full moon with “Universe Exploded” — a song that drifts in like a dream and leaves like a detonation. The first collaboration with producer MattyMadeIt at the helm, it begins as folk-filled-dream-pop and unravels into glittering bedlam, mirroring the messy, miraculous work of learning to love yourself again after running life in the red.
The track arrives alongside two equally sharp-edged cuts — “Little Sister” and “Honest Joe” — marking a creative turning point where Gray’s backlog of unreleased songs finally begins to close the gap with the present.
“I’ve had songs sitting around for a year or more, waiting for their turn,” Gray says. “With each monthly release, that gap gets smaller. ‘Universe Exploded’ is a big step towards showing off my 'recent' work.”
At its heart, “Universe Exploded” is a love letter to the self — penned in the stillness after years of living high and running hard. It wrestles with the weight of regret, the pull of old loops, and the challenge of forgiving yourself enough to lay your wild mind at peace. Musically, it’s the archetypal Tomi Gray mix-mash: beginning as a tender folk-dream then swelling into bedlam and chaos as the universe — and the self — finally unravels. Through raw admissions and flashes of childlike memory (“I learnt my love as a three-year-old when the whole universe exploded”), the song frames self-love not as a neat ending, but as a fragile, ongoing act of survival.
Known for his surreal humour, poetic grit, and genre-fluid sound — part folk grit, part psychedelic dancefloor, part absurdist theatre — Gray has been drip-feeding new music on every full moon since January. Previous drops include Feet, Trampoline, and ORPHANS (full length Album), each unveiling a different facet of his ever-morphing identity.
Beyond the studio, Gray has spent 2025 touring full-time with Infamous Circus, weaving his music and stagecraft into a nightly cocktail of candy, grit, and theatrical mischief. Past credits include fronting the notorious Dracula’s Cabaret and festival appearances across Australia and Europe (Yonder Fest, Ferrara Fest, Folklorum, Elfia, Mitchell Creek Blues, Wallaby Creek).
“Universe Exploded” marks the start of a new creative chapter, with MattyMadeIt’s production injecting fresh urgency into Gray’s sound — a preview of the high-energy releases still to come before the year’s final full moon.
